Department of Health senior forensic pathologist Joey Lam witnessed shoddy autopsies carried out by Philippine National Police medicolegal officers before their bodies were repatriated. Lam said the examinations were conducted by a person with unknown medical qualifications, and supervised by police officers with less than one year of training. Important procedures, such as the weighing of bodies, checking clothing for powder burns and X-rays, were also not carried out, he said yesterday.

"In civilized countries, X-rays are very important during autopsies, especially in shooting cases, to locate bullets fragments in the bodies," Lam was "astonished" when wounds caused by incisions into body tissues were not stitched up. This was only done by staff at a funeral home.Lam said he made repeated requests to have remains kept under refrigeration at the funeral home, so they would not deteriorate in the hot weather. We told [the staff] we could pay for the dry ice or a cool storage facility, but they replied that those things were not available."Corpses were instead preserved by chemicals, which Lam pointed out could affect the accuracy of examinations to be conducted in Hong Kong.Meanwhile, six survivors and relatives of the victims again issued a joint letter demanding Manila send witnesses to the inquest and to provide crucial evidence, such as a DNA sample of gunman and hostage-taker Rolando Mendoza.
It called for an immediate reply from Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, as the 25-day inquest enters its 18th day today.Manila autopsy staff hit over shoddy work Natalie Wong Wednesday, March 09, 2011 www.thestandard.com.hk/news_detail.asp?we_cat=4&art_id=108893&sid=31568896&con_type=1&d_str=20110309&fc=4
